Baghdad – A curfew has been imposed in the Iraqi city of Tikrit after security forces dispersed a prison riot on Sunday, security sources said.
Hundreds of inmates had gathered in a yard within the al-Mawqef Wa al-Tasfirat prison grounds in central Tikrit, some 170 kilometres north of Baghdad.
Riot police and military units surrounded the prison and used tear gas as well as sound bombs to disperse the protesting prisoners. It was not known what they were protesting against.
Many of the inmates at the prison are serving life sentences or are awaiting execution, sources said.
The time of the curfew to be imposed on the city was not disclosed.
