Last Dec. 5 in Iraq, the first day of Ashura the day of the celebration of the martyrdom of Hussein, grandson of the Prophet, (a day of special celebration for Shiite Muslims), the prime minister’s spokesperson Saad al-Muttalibi announced — in a statement that few media considered worthwhile to reproduce — another imminent murder. Tareq Aziz, former foreign minister and vice president of the country under Saddam Hussein, would be executed as soon as the U.S. forces leave the country.
Reports from Iraq say that his execution is imminent. Tareq Aziz, who turns 76 years next April, has been in prison since 2003, when after the capture of Baghdad by the U.S. he surrendered to the U.S. invasion troops in exchange for allowing his wife and daughters to leave Iraq. This is a new murder given a cover by a sham trial, which reveals the despotic and murderous character of the puppet government imposed by the United States. This al-Maliki regime so far this year has executed 65 people, including several women, who were convicted of crimes although no proof was offered.
The European Parliament in a Nov. 25, 2010 resolution called for the commutation of the death sentence against Aziz and to stop mass executions in Iraq. Amnesty International and the Vatican also demanded the commutation of death penalty.
In his interview in prison in 2010 since his arrest in 2003, Tareq Aziz said:
“[…] Here [in Iraq] and there is nothing. Nothing … There are more diseases than before, more hunger. People lack public services, murders are committed every day by dozens if not hundreds. We are all victims of U.S. and Britain. They have murdered our country. ”
Their goal is to kill a worthy man, one who exposed the true character of imperialist aggression against his country, who fought for its sovereignty and independence, for the conservation of natural resources (the real reason for the invasion), and who knows too well all the secrets behind the forces that invaded his country and about the corrupt puppet governments that have ruled Iraq since then.
In a last-ditch attempt to save his life and to denounce the repressive policies of the current Iraqi government, we demand the immediate release of Tariq Aziz and the end to executions of Iraqi citizens .
